- Thunder God (Raijin) by Tawaraya Sotatsu Late 16th-early 17th century Gold leaf and ink on paper part of a pair of two-fold screens
This is a gorgeous print by Japanese painter Sotatsu. It depicts a Yokai-like deity with jet black hair and pointed horns. He’s surrounded by a circle of drums, which he uses to create thunder. I love the ancient mythology surrounding this work, and I really hope that you enjoy it.
- Self-Portrait by Ren Xiong Hanging scroll; ink and color on paper Quing Dynasty
This is an immensely powerful work by Chinese artist, Xiong. Xiong depicts himself as an extremely tall man covered in sky-blue robes. His face emits pure energy, and his eyes pierce the viewer with awesome power. Tell me what you think of this piece in the comments’ section below.
