More Awesome Beasts of Japanese Mythology (Wednesdays)

Konbanwa everyone! It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means! Yes, it’s time for us to go on another journey to the “Land of the Rising Sun”. I hope you guys are ready for some truly interesting mythical beasts. Now, let’s get started!

  • Rainy Day! The Amefuri kozo is a very strange, but important creature of Japanese mythology. They are depicted as small boys with straw hats, kimonos, and large fat noses. (yokai.com) Despite their innocent looking appearance, they are quite important to the world. (yokai.com) They are said to control rainfall, and wherever an Amefuri kobo appears, rain is sure to follow. (yokai.com) They are completely harmless to humans, although they are known to steal people’s umbrellas and wear them as hats! (yokai.com)

  • Mountain Man! The Yamajijii are very strange, but quite dangerous creatures of Japanese folklore. They are about 3-4 feet tall, old, and have only one leg and 2 eyes. (yokai.com) While appearing cyclopean, their other eye is gigantic. (yokai.com) They are also known to have “razor sharp” teeth capable of crushing bones. (yokai.com) They live on mountains, and stay far away from humans. (yokai.com)
