Toys: The Strange, Recalled, and Anger-Inducing (Sundays)

  • Chomp! Snacktime Kid Cabbage Patch Dolls: I have always been more into Garbage Pail Kids myself, but that is besides the point. These dolls came equipped with battery-operated mechanical jaws. The jaws ended up being able to chew much more than fake food. Many children have been seriously injured by the dolls chomping their hands or other appendages into their mouths. It was recalled in 1997 by Mattel. (burlingamepezmuseum.com)

  • Bang! The Austin Magic Pistol was a toy gun that was created in the 1950’s. It had a special way of firing by using gas-powered combustion. To make matters worse, the so-called “magic crystals”  used to fire the gun were made up of a very harmful material called calcium carbide. When in contact with water, the “crystals” would combust and fire a plastic ball 70 feet or more. (takejusticeback.com)

  • You knew this one was coming! The Easy-Bake Oven is considered to be one of the most dangerous children’s toys ever made. It was recalled in 2007 by Hasbro due to a serious flaw in the design of the oven. Not only could the oven go up to temperatures up to 200OC (400OF), it also could trap children’s fingers inside. This lead to almost 250 incidents of injury from burns to even partial finger amputation. (listverse.com)
